Dr. Lukasz A. Sterczewski is an assistant professor in the faculty of Electronics, Photonics, and Microsystems at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology in Poland. His research focuses on room temperature generation and detection of terahertz waves. He holds 3 international patents and has 5 years of research experience in the US including NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Caltech, and Princeton. Now he continues his research journey in Poland with a newly established research team. His research interests include semiconductor laser frequency combs, broadband optical spectroscopy, infrared photonics, and signal processing.

Grzegorz Gomółka received his B.Sc. in biomedical engineering in 2019 and M.Sc. in optics and photonics in 2020 at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (WUST). He obtained his PhD degree in physical sciences from WUST in September 2024. His scientific research focused on the development of novel methods and configurations in laser gas spectroscopy using semiconductor lasers and optical heterodyne detection. During his PhD he was a PI in Diamentowy Grant project regarding applications of hollow-core fibers in gas spectroscopy. He realized scientific internships under the supervision of Prof. Gerard Wysocki at Princeton University, where he worked on gas spectroscopy using quantum cascade laser frequency combs and Prof. Christos Markos at Technical University of Denmark (DTU), where he was developing tunable mid-IR filters using hybrid polymer-silica hollow-core fibers. He was awarded with SPIE Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship in 2023 for his research achievements and engagement in local SPIE community activities and efforts to popularize optics and photonics. His current scientific interests and area of research are advanced semiconductor laser physics, optoelectonics, applications of optical heterodyning and generation and detection of terahertz waves with semiconductor nanodevices.

Wiktoria Szymska is a doctoral student at Wrocław University of Technology. She earned her B.Sc. in Control, electronic and information engineering with a specialization in Informatics and her M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Mechatronic Systems at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice. She completed an internship project as part of the Candela Resonators program at Warsaw University of Technology. Her scientific interests include investigation of carrier dynamics in semiconductors for THz wave generation.

Jakub Mnich is a doctoral student at Wrocław University of Science and Technology, where he also earned his B.Sc. in Electronics and M.Sc. in Chemical Technology. His expertise centers on scientific instrumentation, particularly the design of embedded systems and optical devices, developed through his experience in R&D roles for companies focused on automotive electronics, pathogen detection, and environmental monitoring. His research interests include practical broadband spectroscopy in the infrared and THz ranges, advanced signal processing, and instrumentation engineering.

Adrian Chlebowski is a doctoral student at Wrocław University of Technology. He earned his B.Sc. in Electronics with a specialization in Electronic Apparatus and his M.Sc. in Advanced Applied Electronics at the same university. During his master’s studies, he realized a scientific internship at the Faculty of Electronics, Photonics, and Microsystems. His research focuses on ultrashort laser pulse characterization and the development of diagnostic tools. His scientific interests include optoelectronics, signal processing, and the detection of ultrashort pulses with semiconductor laser diodes.

Sara Łukasik is a master’s student at Wrocław University of Technology, following the Advanced Applied Electronics course. She earned a B.Sc. in Physics, followed by a B.Sc. in Computer Science at the University of Warsaw. Her involvement in the group began after completing an internship project as part of the Candela Resonators program, during which she developed an automated system for characterizing the far-field profile of IR diodes. Her scientific interests include laser systems, nonlinear optics, and integrated photonics.
Former group members

Agata Kotulska’s research focuses on optical spectroscopy, construction of optical experimental setups, and computational modelling of physical phenomena. She earned a degree in technical physics from Wroclaw University of Technology (PWr), at the Faculty of Fundamental Technological Problems (WPPT), where she studied the optical properties of optical fibers through theoretical and experimental work. During her doctoral studies at the Institute of Low Temperatures and Structural Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (INTiBS PAN), she investigated fluorescence properties of lanthanide-doped nanocrystals. A PRELUDIUM grant supported research on the optical properties of nanomaterials and organic dyes related to resonant energy transfer, utilizing Monte Carlo simulations for energy migration and rate equations describing transitions between energy levels in lanthanide ions, with support from the Wroclaw Centre for Networking and Supercomputing (WCSS). During postdoctoral fellowships, she developed experimental optical systems. At the International Center for Eye Research (ICTER), she developed a system for two-photon fundus imaging and heterochromatic flicker photometry (HFP). Subsequently, at the Department of Electronics, Photonics and Microsystems, Wroclaw University of Technology, she constructed a system for measuring broadband terahertz radiation using nonlinear organic crystals. In her spare time, Dr. Kotulska enjoys hiking in the mountains.
